Landslide Disrupts Access to Similipal National Park Amid Heavy Rainfall

Severe Weather Causes Landslide in Similipal

In Baripada, communication to three gram panchayats within Similipal National Park faced interruptions due to a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall on Sunday night, which was caused by a low-pressure system.

The landslide took place close to Mahubhandar village, affecting the main road that links Kalikaprasad with the Gudugudia region of the sanctuary.

Over the past 12 hours, Similipal recorded a staggering 432.60mm of rainfall, significantly higher than the average of 24.03mm. Consequently, access for four-wheelers to the Gudgudia and Kalikaprasad areas has been prohibited.

State Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia, along with Sai Kiran, the deputy director of the North Division of Similipal Tiger Reserve, visited the affected area to assess the situation. The minister has instructed officials to expedite the clearance of the route to restore travel.

Ambulances, fire brigade teams, and tourists who were staying overnight in the sanctuary have been advised to use the Chahala route and return via Jashipur for their safety.
